Our 4th Annual Dinner Dance took place in the Tower Hotel Waterford on Saturday February 10th 2007. The event was a huge success, and to our delight both Alan Kennedy and Jim Beglin were  in our company as special guests. Jim Beglin was born in Waterford where he grew up playing football here for local club Bohemians FC. He played under 16 for a munster team in the provincial league where he was spotted by none other than Eamonn Dunphy who worked for League of Ireland club Shamrock Rovers. He was quickly snapped up and moved to Dublin to play for Rovers for two years until he became Bob Paisley's final signing as manager for Liverpool in 1983. Ironically Jim took over the number 3 jersey from the legend that is Alan Kennedy. Always remembered for the two winning European Cup Final goals it was certainly a tall order for Jim to fill the left back slot once Alan had departed in 1985 for Sunderland. Jim had no problem adapting and was part of the Liverpool team to have won the League and FA Cup double in season 1985/86 clocking up no less than 50 games that season.  Pictured above is the function room prior to the evening. Credit to the Tower Hotel Waterford for a wonderful venue to match the distinguished guests on the night. Once dinner was completed the crowd were entertained with some fantastic stories from Jim and Alan from their playing days. Alan told us he was only 19yrs old when he played for Newcastle Utd against Liverpool in the 1974 FA cup final. He said he never thought he would see the day he would play for Liverpool. He said "Only 2 months after Liverpool had won the European Cup for a second successive season I got word that they were interested in signing me". By the beginning of the following season I was playing for the European champions on the opening day of the season at Anfield." What turned out to be a glittering 7 year spell at the reds Alan went on to pick up 5 league title winners medals, 2 European Cup winners medals, 4 league cup winners medals and 2 England caps. He jokingly added that Kenny Sansom and himself managed 100 caps between them for England." The bugger got 98 of them though" added Alan. He played 356 times for the first team and scored 21 goals in the process.Pictured accepting a piece of Waterford Crystal is Alan Kennedy presented to him by junior branch member Shane Prendergast.
